    Hi Jasmine
I just couldn't resist this one.
How could anyone resist viewing or taking a photo of a red and white lighthouse :)

interesting note, and now i'm going to have to check out that other photo from the inside too.

the blue and white skyline in the bg helps to bring out the lighthouse itself.
    fun shot

    Hi Craig,

No tripod, eh? So I guess this one sure ain't HDR.

But what a beautifully composed photograph and one which just works so well despite the obvious disortion caused by such a wide angle view. The circles of hanging lights above the floor (where there are presumably rows upon rows of individual prayer mats where the trespasser is standing) are perfectly horizontal and balance well the circular dome high above.

Gorgeous light and colours and stunning details and sharpness - as always.

And, of course, an interesting and enlightening note!

    Fabulous!

    Kind Regards,

    John.

    Hi Recep
yes, a true timeless piece of photography.
I don't think there is anything here that gives it away, one could easily think this was taken 150 years ago.

love this overall atmosphere and mood.
    well captured

    Hi Silvio
you've done something here that I always try to avoid, thats photographing a scene thats in full light and in full darkness.

but it came out pretty nice didn't it :)
the tiles on the ground in the fg are an attractive addition.

    good lines and perspectives too.
    smartly done

    Hi Klaudio
I welcome these photos from Melbourne at any time!
living here in Vancouver, we don't really get to see much of Melbourne - as you may have guessed Sydney gets most of the attention over here.

I recognize the building in the bg, the mustard yellow colored one with the green dome. Seems to find its way into many Melbourne shots :)

you're scene has a true relaxed feel to it.
    clear and sharp presentation.

    Hi Jasmine,

This is a lovely interior shot: just the kind of photograph you do so very well. And what a delightful surprise to see that you took it with your new Canon EOS M!

The light here obviously couldn't have been too dim because I see you used ISO 320 but the details and sharpness and general quality of this image are superb. A very fine and well balanced composition well exposed and with lots of detail visible in even the deepest shadows.

    Lovely!

    Kind Regards,

    John.

P.S. Yes, I have been playing around with my new "toy" too - nothing serious yet, just a few snapshots, but it really is quite fun. Not nearly so quick to focus as a DSLR but otherwise good - and a lot lighter to carry!

    Hi John
I have to admit, flying a kite is something i didn't do alot of as a child...i wonder why?
Living and growing up in Newfoundland we certainly had the wind! :)

you've set up the scene smartly John. Having placed the boy in the fg and the father in the bg, creates a good sense of depth and dof.

Same could be said for the landscape in the far bg. Its sort of like a 3-zone photograph.
Our eyes view the scene in 3 steps.

makes me want to buy a Kite :)
but here in Vancouver the trees hardly ever move! Not much wind around here.

always fun to see a new photo from you John

    Hello Daniel,

You have, as always, written a very interesting note.

When I first saw the thumbnail of this picture, I thought that this might have been a boat on fire and so I immediately thought of the tradition of Up Helly Aa which is practised in January in the Shetland Islands.

But this, of course, is not a boat but a simple bonfire lit on a small island in the shallows. And what a striking feature this huge fire is in the dark landscape. Beautiful light and colours, fine composition, spot-on exposure (in difficult conditions) and excellent details and sharpness.

    Excellent!

    Kind Regards,

    John.

    Hello Edward,

I know this place very well and I think that this is a delightful photograph of this interesting piece of mechanical engineering.

The trouble is that from this viewpoint (and I think that this is the best viewpont from which to capture a well composed image like this one) - you are looking almost directly south so, unless the sky is very favourable, it usually ends up being fairly bland and overly bright.

Yes, the sky here is a little bright and featureless but that deficiency is well compensated by the crispness and sharpness of your picture which really shows the "wheel" to great effect and with perfect colours and contrasts. The reflections in the water are delightful too.

    Excellent!

    Kind Regards,

    John.

    Hello Ann,

A delightful photograph from your trip to the west of the USA and one which again reinforces the observation that the best photographs are often captured when the weather is the least clement - so don't pack away your camera when it rains!

The light here is lovely and I love the way that the foreground light brings out the rich colours of the old red wooden barn, the grass and the fence and makes them stand out so well against that dark and threatening sky.

A fine simple composition with all the elements pleasingly arranged within the frame and with an excellent "lead in" furnished by the fence on the left. Gorgeous colours and exquisite details and sharpness.

    Beautiful!

    Kind Regards,

    John.
