Hello Andre - thanks for posting this. Easy to forget in the excitement the human cost of such things, though I think in general more attention is paid to these issues now than in decades past. In China, there was a very real backlash against the government for the clearances of lower-income areas for the massive Olympic stadiums in Beijing, and the protests in Brazil have been front page news here in the US. I really wish a way could be found for organizations like FIFA to have to surrender more of the profit back to the host country, which typically makes nothing and in fact is often in debt for events such as these. Your shot does well to remind us of this. Thanks.

Korkut - while the shot would be as effective without the tilt, it adds a nice sense of movement to the shot. Meanwhile, I flat out love the contrast and beautiful conversion you've done here - this is the definition of difficult light and you've managed it perfectly while catching a passer-by at the right moment as well. Very well done.

Fascinating shot, Stephane, and well taken. The jet trails create a lovely pattern lower in the frame while the one that took a turn catches our eye effectively, and all of this is set against a really lovely sunset. Abstraction indeed - nicely done.

Hello Abmdsudi - there is a soft focus to this, and I'm not sure if that is intentional, but I am quite sure that it works well, giving the photo an ethereal quality that, despite the everyday aspect of the shot, fits well. There is a mystery to it, and a sense of nobility as well. Thanks!

The shadows really give this one an extra bit of pop, Mike, as does the great texture of the building itself. Nicely spotted, and the writeup is even a bit poetic...

Hi Kari - I've been to many zoos and aquariums, and in almost every single one the penguins are the most popular animal around - I wonder why that is?

This shot captures the love children have for these animals well. The hands on the glass and reflections of faces are excellent, drawing an immediate connection. Nice candid shot. Thanks!

Hey Jason - congrats on your anniversary! Keep 'em coming, yours is some of my favorite work around here. This is a nice and unique view of the city; instead of the bustle around, you focused on time itself, something New York always seems to lack enough of!

Wow, Noel! Surprised you didn't go blind just looking through the viewfinder for this one! You did a great job capturing the brightness of the sun while keeping gorgeous color and definition elsewhere in the shot, and it's a perfect silhouette. We can even still see a bit of detail from the brick wall below! Nicely done.

I really like how this photo progresses, Mike - standard utilitarian architecture at the top, then a more modern swoop, and then... total deconstruction! I'm still not sure where the reflection is here, as there are so many layers to this one, but this is a great example of your eye for patterns and abstraction within architecture.

    Thanks!

Craig, did you warn this poor woman she was about to get abducted by aliens!?!? She seems so calm about the whole thing!!!

Seriously, what a shot! Perfectly conceived using the escalator to create strong lines up to the ceiling, and the woman taking the picture on her way up? Outstanding! I love everything about it, down to the way she's lit by the illuminated rails! Nicely done, straight to favorites.

What a beautiful image, Kamila! An incredible bridge, to be sure, but your use of soft, late light and the perspective are both perfect in their creation of this scene. There's a great sense of peace here, among the fall colors and the peaceful river. Worth all of the praise it has received! Thanks.

Hello Asa - a notable location for sure! amazing to see all of that green life atop this building, especially when there's so little in the bustling town below. A shame about all of those wires; I still don't know why more towns and cities around the world refuse to bury them! It's safer AND more visually pleasing... until then, photographers everywhere will make do!

Hello Achim - a pleasant daily life shot of Zanzibar here. Your setting is great: the doors are most impressive and offer a nice contrast to the surroundings, while the man on the bicycle is a perfect addition, lending life and motion to the shot. Good light management in harsh daylight as well. Thanks!

I love this idea - and in fact it reminds me of something a friend showed me today: this site, which has almost flawless then and now photos comparing spots from D-Day and the Allied invasion of Europe during World War II with their modern day counterparts (just click on each image to see the modern version). It also inspires me to post something similar from my own travels tomorrow...

as for the photos themselves, it amazes me to see the changes - in style, in photography, in architecture. The building itself has been so heavily revitalized - even though a part of me loves the worn look from the first image, I'm sure it has improved the health of the building overall. And though the people have changed, and the fashions have changed, it's nice to see that these stairs are still a place people gather to relax and talk!

    Thanks,
    Andrew

A beautiful hazy sepia-toned shot of Rio here, Andre. And of course great to see a shot of Brazil from a native here while the World Cup is being played all across your great country! This is not a view of Rio's famed harbor we often see, so I'm glad you've shared it here. Thanks, and though the critique comes a couple days late, happy birthday!

Hi John - a beautiful street scene here, well taken despite what you describe in your reply to Rosemary as very little time to work with. I agree generally with those who have mentioned the slightly 'off' focus or processing of the two main figured (I feel as well that I can see some softening in the crowd of women behind them as well?) I always struggle with the question of how far to go with Photoshop (or in my case lightroom). As evidence of that, by the way, I'll point out - though no one's mentioned it yet - that you can see evidence of some dodging and burning on my Boston sunrise shot I posted the other day. I generally go with the maxim that when the processing is noticeable, there is too much of it - but of course it's always hard to tell when that is! In any event, I certainly appreciate the thought process behind both the shot and the processing of it. And it's always good to discuss these things as well - sometimes I agree with those who say we don't do enough friendly criticism on TE, I know I could benefit from more of it!

    Thanks,
    Andrew
