    Hello Ourania,

What a lovely story - if you hadn't been good enough to stop to give directions to those people, you might have missed this lovely view and the beautiful light which attracted you to it!

I love how the warm evening light illuminates the church and houses on the slope of Castle Hill while the reflections of the sky make the water seem to shimmer like silver in the more shaded lower part of your picture while a solitary fisherman sits relaxing in the hope that a fish will chance along and take his bait.

Beautiful soft light, warm colours, perfect exposure and exquisite details and clarity.

    Beautiful!

    Kind Regards,

    John.

    Bonjour Nicolas,

This artist seems to be sitting in a rather strange place - he seems to be looking directly into the strong sunlight and I'm wondering how he is able to view his subject properly. But from your viewpoint the light is perfect and you have captured him with his easel, canvas and paints very well framed in the old stone archway of this house.

Strong light but nicely managed shadows, fine colours, perfect exposure and excellent details and clarity.

    Lovely!

    Kind Regards,

    John.

    Hello Rob,

A fascinating and informative note about Nalini Malini and her work and a very fine photograph, of considerable artistic quality itself, demonstrating a wonderful play of light, colour and silhouette.

I love how we see, in the distant view, works of art on the warm orange wall while three admirers of them are nicely silhouetted against them and there's almost an appearance of an aurora above them as light is reflected and refracted in those clear transparent cylinders at the top of your image.

A finely composed photograph with amazing light, shadows and contrasts, rich colours, perfect exposure and exquisite details and clarity.

    Lovely!

    Kind Regards,

    John.

    Hi Lars
This is a nice historical building, though small and quite unassuming but very nicely observed here in its urban context. This is another building I used to build on the pc game simcity, si that makes me smile too

    Ciao caro Silvio,

A fascinating note about the history of Santo Stefano di Sessanio and a beautiful and well composed photograph of it.

I love how you have used this magnificent high and bold archway to frame the piazza and the old buildings which themselves are beautifully portrayed against a lovely blue summer sky. The light and colours are delightful, your exposure perfect and the details and clarity are exquisite.

    Beautiful!

    Ciao caro Luciano,

You write a very thought provoking note here! If we believe that photography exists purely to record things and places of beauty, then, yes, these are disturbing elements. But if we believe that photography is for recording reality, then this is a perfect example of that - a perfect representation of daily life with all its beauty but with all its blemishes and scars.

If we take a photograph of another human being, do we want to record them as being beautiful with glowing skin, bright eyes and looking 20 years younger than they really are? Or do we want their photograph to show all the lines of laughter and experience on their face, their grey hairs and their less than perfect figures? In reality, very few of us look as perfect as Michelangelo's David - so are we all supposed to look as perfect as him?

I love this picture, very well seen and very well taken - and perhaps we should all be trying more to capture reality rather than trying to capture only the beautiful things we see around us!

    Perfect!

    Kind Regards,

    John.

    Hi Mariusz,

What a gorgeous place! I can understand why you wanted to visit this lovely beach and I hope you and your family managed to spend some time here.

The view here is spectacular and you have captured it perfectly in this beautifully composed photograph with glorious light and colours, especially of the clear blue/green sea and the fascinating vegetation on that rock. Perfect exposure and exquisite details and sharpness.

    Hi Kari,

Thank you for your critique today on my photo of a Spitfire with a Hurricane!

As soon as I saw this I got a bit of a fright - how ignorant I am that I had not realised that the swastika was used as an emblem of the Finnish Air Force until 1945. And, of course, the swastika was actually a symbol of peace in many religions for thousands of years - long before the Nazis adopted it.

This is a much nicer photograph than mine. I like the interesting sky with its puffy white clouds and I like how the aeroplane actually appears to be moving rather than just static in the sky. Your composition is just right, the colours are true, your exposure perfect and the details and sharpness are excellent.

    Fabulous!

    Kind Regards,

    John.

P.S. I think you have been wise to use 1/500 second for this exposure as we can see plenty of movement in the propeller - my photo doesn't show the movement so well at 1/1250 sec.

    Hi Craig,

A quick look at Google told me that this is, in fact, the Headquarters of Edinburgh Council.

Your high "aerial" view from the top of the Nelson Monument on Calton Hill has given you a very fine picture in which the lush green grass on these flat roofs brightens up the whole building against the darker drab background of old tenement buildings behind. And the fact that the sun was shining brightly on this building when you took the picture has enhanced the image even more.

A well composed shot with glorious light and colours, perfect exposure and exquisite details and sharpness.

    Beautiful!

    Kind Regards,

    John.

    Hello Stephen,

As always, a fascinating and informative note - and, having seen a picture yesterday from the interior of this sumptuous place, how nice now to see a photograph of its splendid southern fašade.

Facing south, this splendid part of the palace is lit in glorious bright sunlight, bringing out its vibrant colours superbly against the deep blue sky. I love the symmetrical composition, the light and the vibrant colours - and the details and clarity are exquisite.

    Ciao caro Luciano,

A fascinating note about your visit to Naples, even though the weather was not the best.

However, the lack of sun has not stopped you achieving a wonderful photograph here, particularly as that cloudy sky is incredibly impressive! I love how the boats and the water seem to be lit much brighter than the sky, making them stand out wonderfully and clearly.

A well composed photograph with lovely light and colours, perfect exposure and exquisite details and sharpness.

    Hello Jean,

Thank you for such an interesting and informative note. I've always thought that oast houses were pretty much confined to Kent - is that true or have you seen them in other parts of the country? And I presume that nowadays hops are dried in modern electrical or gas fired ovens or driers.

But these old oast houses are delightful and you have captured them perfectly in this very pleasingly composed image in which the curvature of the roadway leads us toward them so effectively.

I love the rich warm colours of the old brickwork and the roofs and how the white metal cowls all point in the same direction into a lovely blue sky with nice fluffy clouds. And the image is nicely framed by the two trees - a tall one on the left and a smaller one to the right.

Lovely soft light, lovely natural colours, perfect exposure and exquisite details and sharpness.

    Beautiful!

    Kind Regards,

    John.

    Hello John,

I see that you have been using the same lens (Canon 100 - 400mm) which I was using at our recent airshow!

This is a beautifully clear and sharp photograph. Yes, it is just a pity that this beautiful ship was not in full sail but, nonetheless, you have produced a very well composed image in which the tall ship stands out beautifully against the dark sea and sky with stunning details and clarity.

    Beautiful!

    Kind Regards,

P.S. I am afraid that as soon as I saw this, I simply could not resist doing some research! I do believe that this ship is the Georg Stage, a training ship.

    Hello John,

Two splendid photographs, each quite different: one of a friendly and helpful policeman guiding a tourist while the other is a fabulous photograph of the magnificent interior of St. Jacobs church.

I love the soft light in the church and how you have managed to take this photograph without any strong shadows or overly bright areas - I suspect that your secret is to keep the contrast low in processing. The colours are lovely, your exposure perfect and the composition and the details and sharpness are exquisite.

    Hi Craig,

As I mentioned to you, I've been up here myself though many, many years ago. Even as a young chap I found the stairs towards the top very narrow and awkward and it must have been difficult for you with a rucksack full of camera equipment if the place was as busy as you say. And did you know that this is the largest monument anywhere in the World dedicated to a writer?

Anyway, your workshop photograph shows the monument perfectly and your main photograph clearly demonstrates what a wonderful and panoramic view you get from the top. A very well composed shot with the clocktower perfectly placed and with lovely light and colours and, as always, stunning details and clarity.

    Fabulous!

    Kind Regards,

    John.
