    Hello Lisa

Fantastic composition! Your choice of monochrome was brave, as I imagine there was plenty of colour about, but the b/w really emphasizes the chome and hard reflections. Excellent!

    Hello Lisa

I've been in the Paragon several times! We had the best chocolate cake ever in here: and we'd just come from Vienna, where the famous Sachertorte (eaten in the Café Sacher) was not a patch on Katoomba's offering! I took some photos inside - I expect you did too - and love the Art Deco decoration, visible of course in your image of the entrance. Last time we were there, we stayed in the Clarendon on Lurline Street: another slighly eccentric Katoomba institution. Thanks for the memories!

    Hello Jean

I know this place well from sailing trips. I wonder if you were on a boat to take this (maybe the Cremyll ferry?) We've moored up in the marina just here (the Mayflower Marina): perhaps that's another candidate for your location! The port-hand buoy is such an important element in your composition: without its splash of colour, the shot would not work so well.

Pretty and understated townscape. I like the steep alleyway taking our eyes into the frame, and the tightly packed buildings each side of the composition, which hold our gaze.

    Hello Malgo

An interesting, quirky note, and a lovely image to boot! At first I thought it was unaccountably under-exposed; then I realised that this is a shot of the "white night"! I love the stillness, the blue-hued light and the traditional boats (though one modern plastic dinghy and a rubber one have intruded!)

    Hello Claude

I like the Pyrénées too! I've only been there in Summer, when, as your photograph amply demonstrates, the beauty is obvious. But in Winter there is a different and even starker form of beauty. I love this; the hiker with his orange rucksack adds the (necessary?) splash of vivid colour.

    Hello Stephen

As an inveterate "messer about in boats", this obviously appeals to me. In fact my boat is very similar to the little white-hulled yacht in the foreground of your photo (though mine's prettier!) The sun, blue sky, little schooner with sails set, and green waters make this place look idyllic.

    Hello Noel

Fine choice of subject for monochrome treatment (although judging by your previous posting of 10/7, there was in fact some colour in the foreground flowers). You've added drama to the sky, which works very well, apart from a slight but definite halo or rim, particularly round the stones, which is a bit of a giveaway! I particularly like your choice of low viewpoint.

    Hello dear Barbara,

In pre-digital days I took dozens of slides of the ball court in Chichen Itza, but your expansive shot shows it off better than any of my photos. I like very much the colors of the grass and the stones walls.

    Bonjour cherrie, Gigi,

I have always wanted to see Bruges, and in your photo I get a good idea of its 17th century (and older) building. Our good friend John Maenhout has been very generous with his photos from Bruges, and recently we watched "Salamander," the TV series making the Belgium and Bruges very alluring.

    Warmest regards, Gigi,

    Hello Malgorzata,

Whenever I see photo of the wilderness of Norway, I picture in my mind's eye the Vikings. No doubt they wandered into this cove one time or another. This is a serene view in the middle of summer. You asked whether we had ever been Lofoten, we have not. We have been to the North Cape a couple of times and remember having a photo taken at midnight with a clock right behind us, without any artificial light.

    Warmest regards,

Excellent framing here for this gorgeous and apparently unspoiled hill village. Restoration is fine when it is done sympathetically like this. The clouds on the hillside beyond form a deep backdrop for the sunlit buildings. I want to go there!

    Hello Cristina

So you're back with your Proud Parade theme. I always like people pictures, and well remember your series from previous years. The monochome is brave, given the amount of colour I imagine was in the shot, but it works very well to create an urban feel. Good expression!

    Hello Bev

I've never been afraid of slight under-exposure, and it's certainly worked here beautifully, to inject a serious dramatic edge to the photograph. The lowering clouds counterpoint the flash of white roof catching the sunlight very well. Composition too is strong and thirdsy. Nice one.

    Hello Ann

I agree: empty, stark landscapes are often the most effective and atmospheric, just as empty minimalist photos in general have a special impact. Although I was brought up in the Essex marshes - a very different landscape - it shares the lonely, empty quality of this fine image. But with less drama! I love this; of course it would be a very different picture without that important and significantly-placed splodge of red!

    Kind regards

    Will

    Hello Piotr,

This is really one of the most beautiful photos in your rich gallery. Perched at the crest of the rugged mountains, you can see the drop off on the left immersed in soup fog, on the right, the details a sharp. I've heard of the rugged beauty of Slovakia, otherwise I know precious little about the difference in the Czech vs. Slovak sides. Again, this is a first rate photo.

    Hello Jasmine,

The light is genuinely beautiful on the Georgian house, bathing it in golden hues, and a highly distressed sky looming in the background. I think this is the best way to photograph some of the architecture anywhere. With a frequency of once per year I would see this sort of inspiring light while living in Oxford. Unfortunately it was during pre-digital photography days.

    Warm regards,

    Hello Brenda,

I thought I had critiqued this photo, but clearly I had not (I may have run out of green smileys). The vertical format is indeed the best way to accentuate the midget among giants. You had wonderful light to shoot this image. Indeed, with that wonderful reflection, in the curved glass, the facets accentuated by discontinuities in the reflected clouds. It might be a good choice for the group theme City reflections, if you care to put it there.

Incidentally, we are going to be in New York in late September. I am giving a lecture at One Day University, please, let me know and I will have them invite you.

    Warm regards,

    Bulent
