Hi Wolfgang,

A timeless quality comes out of this image. The composition is strong and well balanced, not in a mathematical way, but from an optical perspective with enough visual tension to avoid predictability and boredom.

A large part of the photo presents no details in the paler zones, but it is far from being a flaw, as it brings so much impact and focus on the kids and their improvised pedestal.

It is a great photo, both in terms of documentation and artistically.

The post-processing is interesting, somewhere between cross-process and otherworldly, offering your image a mystical quality.

I really like the symmetrical approach in the composition, and the pyramidal effect created by the stairs that lead to the centre of the image.

Salut,

Géniale cette église à nulle autre pareille - s'il y en a d'autres, c'est la première fois que je vois une telle toiture.

Le point de vue est vraiment impressionnant, plaçant l'église en angle "héroïque", c'est-à-dire surplombant la position du photographe, apparaissant ainsi plus imposante. Il faut dire qu'avec un pareil décor, difficile de ne pas être impressionné.

Bon éclairage général, même dans les recoins privés de lumière directe.

Salut Olivier,

Quel boulot superbe sur cette image absolument remarquable.

Il y a une apparence de simplicité dans la composition qui plait au premier coup d'oeil, mais quand on y regarde de plus près, on constate la minutie du travail.

L'utilisation des arbres de chaque côté de la route qui viennent cadrer le sujet principal, la route qui dévale doucement vers le centre de la scène, s'assurant de diriger notre oeil juste avant de se courber pour ajouter au charme de la photo.

Il y aussi les tons terreux en premier plan et plan médian qui détonne en douceur sur l'arrière plan bleuté.

Et la touche subtile du vignettage, juste assez pour créer une ambiance, sans s'imposer à outrance.

Du travail de qualité!

Salut Claude,

Je suis toujours attiré par ce genre d'image industrielle et géométrique, mais celle-ci est particulièrement réussie, avec cette opposition d'espaces positifs et négatifs, et de contrastes dans les formes et couleurs.

Le jeu des plans est également remarquable, avec de fortes lignes horizontales, verticales, et l'imposante perspective décentrée qui vient briser la rigidité linéaire. Il y a aussi un parallèle visuel entre les ponts du navire et les grilles des barrières qui ajoute à la relation entre les éléments qui composent cette image.

Puis la gamme étendue de tons de gris et de blancs, que seuls quelques détails rouges viennent ponctuer. Le moment choisi pour saisir la scène contribue à créer une atmosphère singulière.

From your point of view and the sun position, you have dramatize the volumes of the yellow shape with bold contrasts. This image proposes many visual interests, with strong perspective, geometric tensions, colourful impact and a frame within a frame.

You were inspired when doing this image and it shows.

Hi Gert,

Reading your note before commenting brings a completely different perspective and appreciation of your photo.

I have to say that I am highly impressed to learn that you are documenting your trips the way you did, but then again, I guess that this is a second nature for a journalist like you. And your note says a lot about the culture and the politic of that moment that hasn't change in 25 years, or if so, to the worst.

At first sight, I could have easily confused this man for a Peruvian, according to his facial features, the long hair, the colourful stripes from the blanket and the hat.

I admire your guts to photograph this gentle man despite the surrounding reactions, as it isn't everyone who dare to make portraits, even less when feeling uncomfortable with people around, not mentioning their negative attitude.

Bonjour Jean-Jacques,

En voyant cette cabane rustique, les couleurs fanées, les traces de rouille et surtout la flèche qui s'impose sur la toiture, je me serais cru quelque part sur un rivage Islandais.

Trois couleurs qui prennent toute la place dans ce cadrage serré, jouant des angles et des proportions pour former un ensemble géométrique réussi. Une composition qui me plait beaucoup.

Salut,

Pas sûr d'avoir déjà vu un de ces bolides sur TE, alors je trouve la présentation originale et rafraîchissante. Cadrage serré qui focalise sur l'essentiel et optimise l'impact de la voile sur fond de ciel bleu.

Je croyais que le truc qui pendouille derrière la voile était la culotte du pilote qu'il faisait sécher, jusqu'à ce que je comprenne que les deux autres trucs au large ne sont pas des mouettes... J'ai pourtant mes lunettes sur le nez... :-p))

Bonjour Jean-Jacques,

Afin d'éviter l'attaque frontale cinglante, on détecte ici une approche angulaire toute en douceur, mais avec le même impact chromatique.

Ayant aperçu la collection en format réduit, j'en déduis que le photographe s'est bien amusé en tournant autour de ces maisonnettes afin d'exploiter les divers points de vue disponible et de créer autant de tableaux sous l'inspiration du moment.

J'aime bien la maison en premier plan qui est partiellement tronquée, nous suggérant que la série se poursuit au-delà de ce que le cadre nous présente, et nous plonge directement au coeur même de cet alignement cubiste, non pas comme un spectateur à distance, mais plutôt comme si nous étions nous-mêmes dans ce décor. Il ne manque que le bruit des cigales.

Hi Rosemary,

Without a doubt, the most iconic church of Namibia.

I will tell you that I have walked around this church more than once, trying hard to find the best angle to present it, and I don't think that I have figured this one, which looks gorgeous.

If I remember correctly, they were building something on the opposite side, and it was covered with green construction textile, therefore limiting the point of view, but I think that you have managed to avoid it from your very specific angle.

Also, the time of the day often determine which side is the most photogenic, according to the light direction, and in this case, there is no doubt that you took advantage of the light conditions to feature the multi-facets of this building.

Excellent contrasts and optimal volumes.

Vous avez utilisé toutes les pixels oranges disponibles sur mon écran, et maintenant, il n'y en a plus pour les autres...

Dans un passé lointain sur ces pages, il y a un collègue de la francophonie qui aurait utilisé l'expression: "Ça déchire grave sa race", ou quelque chose du genre. Je crois que c'était d'appellation contrôlée Suisse...

Pas de cadrage noir sur cette photo, que de la couleur pour tapisser le panorama au maximum. Ça vaut le coup, avec cette silhouette bien définie qui monte la garde.

Bonne idée que de ratisser large pour le ciel, mais c'est quoi ce combo f/6,3 @ 1/500? Pourquoi pas f/8 @ 1/320? Ou mieux encore, f/16 et un trépied?...

Bon d'accord, je te tire la pipe... T'avais sans doute pomper les ISO, borderline pour éviter le méchant bruit destructeur... :-p))

Si tu pars pour la Turquie, assure-toi de ramasser un phare ou deux au passage, question de gonfler encore plus la collection.

Très belle atmosphère, avec ce ciel aux couleurs pastels et romancé à souhait.

La succession des nuages qui s'agrippent au cadrage en premier plan pour ensuite s'amenuiser tout en se dirigeant vers la maisonnette créent une une ligne de direction subtile mais bien sentie.

La composition est bien équilibrée, avec le petit bateau qui fait contrepoids au bâtiment, formant une diagonale qui fait écho à la formation des nuages.

Le truc blanc qui flotte fait un peu parasite, et selon l'humeur du moment, tu aurais pu t'emporter et donner un bon coup de brosse pour le faire disparaître sous les flots à tout jamais, mais tu étais plutôt tolérant le soir où tu as édité cette photo... :-p))

Hi deniz,

Very well executed image, where just like with your mosque photo, your composition was perfectly framed, ready to welcome the proper subject to fit in.

The way this man is dressed create the desired contrast against the colourful background, and the blur movement is nicely controlled, without excessive vagueness, but just enough to achieve the sense of motion.

The slanted cobblestoned street and the doors trio are a bonus, bringing character and unicity to your shot.

The kind of image where heavily filtered light is actually a blessing.

When I see such a good photo with an odd score, I am always intrigued to know who could possibly offer only point, as he might have seen something I didn't...

Well in your case Deniz, I don't see any flaws and I think that putting the subject in the middle strengthen the sense of balance and symmetry. It is obvious that you had all the time in the world to compose this image, so it is obviously a deliberate choice to place your subject the way you did.

The fact that this person is wearing a red dress create such a big impact, against the monochrome (sort of) background. The contrast of the gigantic archway against the small subject create a strong contrast, and reinforce the sense of greatness from the mosque.

Hi Yves,
I saw this one on your intro page, and I am surprised that I have missed it before as it is spectacular and dramatic. One can feel the power of the water and see the sheer enormous size of it when you compare it to the tiny figure. It reminds one that nature is powerful, more powerful than man. The red of the mans coat makes him stand out so well, and exclamation against the monochrome. Great textures too of the water and the stones in the foreground.

Hi Greg,
I like this little huddle and the rainy weather adds another dimension to the sight seeing trio. The yellow and blue stand out nicely against the almost monochromatic rest of the scene., and they are well placed slightly off centre in the composition.

Hi Carlo,
Great in its simplicity. One lonely building and one lonely cloud at the top of an empty hill. It really looks like it is the last thing remaining on earth, and everything around it has been destroyed except for this tiny oasis of green upon which it sits. Nice contrast between the colour and textures.
