  1. I just signed up, how do I upload a photo?
    Sign in, then click the 'My Account' link followed by clicking the 'Upload' tab.
  2. In what order are photos displayed?
    Photos are displayed from most recent uploaded to oldest.
  3. How can I view the highest rated photos?
    In order to encourage thoughtful critiquing, this is not possible. It is recommended to view the Favorites page instead.
  4. Why is my theme not showing up in on the themes page?
    Themes must contain at least 3 photos before it is displayed publicly.
  5. How can I add a photo to my travelogue?
    Any photo posted within the time frame of the travelogue is automatically displayed within that travelogue.
  6. Why is the world/country map in my Intro page not displaying the latest country/state I uploaded from?
    Maps are refreshed once per 24 hour period.

  7. What does the number next to the photo or member name mean?
    The number next to the photo denotes the total points received for that particular photo. The number next to the member name denotes the total points received for all photos by that member. Points are computed as follows:
    Needs Improvement: +0
    Good: +1
    Great: +2
    No Rating: +0
  8. Why are the rating icons not displayed after writing 20 critiques?
    Rated critiques are limited to 20 per 24 hour period. There is no limit for writing unrated critiques.
  9. What do the gold or silver icons next to a member name mean?
    The gold or silver icons denote a highly rated member. These icons may be combined.

    Each time a member marks a fellow member's critique/workshop/note as Useful, the member receives one point. If the total Useful points received are 50 or higher, the member is designated a corresponding Gold icon. If the points are 10 or higher, a member is designated a corresponding Silver icon.
  10. I just rated a photo, but don't see my rating reflected in the total photo or member points (the number in parenthesis next to each photo or member). Why?
    To make TrekEarth run as quickly as possible, ratings are cached. Total user points are refreshed once per day, and photo points are refreshed every 20 minutes.
    Posting Photos
  11. My photo is too large to upload. How can I reduce it?
    You may edit your photo in a photo editing program like Photoshop and reduce the length, and then save it as a jpeg using a compression level such that it is less than 7mb. The maxiumum width and/or height is 3500 pixels. The minimum width and/or height is 250 pixels. If you do reduce the length of the photo, you probably will want to sharpen your photo using Unsharp Mask.
  12. How do I post a large-sized panoramic photo?
    To post a large-sized panoramic photo, you must first upload a panoramic photo with at least a 2.5:1 ratio. Then you may click the 'Large Post' link in your Manage section next to that photo and begin the process to post the large-sized photo. The longest side must be greater than 800 pixels and may not exceed 3500 pixels.
  13. I posted a photo to the wrong country, how can I change it?
    Please send an email with the proper country and 'state' and it will be changed.
  14. How does a workshop image compare to a final version image?
    Any member may post a workshop image for workshop-enabled photos, these are designated with a 'WS' below the thumbnail image. There may be multiple workshop image postings for a photo. Only the original photographer may post a final version image using the Re-Post option from within their account. This final version image is then linked to the original image which is useful for comparisons and also allows the original critiques and discussions to remain. Final Version photos are designated with a 'RP' below the thumbnail image.
  15. The photo I uploaded isn't sharp. Is any post-processing done on uploaded images?
    There is no post-processing done on uploaded images. It is recommended to sharpen photos before uploading photos to TrekEarth. Please see Microsoft's Understanding Sharpening for detailed information on why sharpening is important, and how to do it.
    Critiquing
  16. What's the difference between a critique and comment?
    Critiques should contain specific information as to why a photo is good or not. Comments should contain information not related to the artistic or technical aspects of the photo.
  17. Why are written critiques necessary when making a critique?
    Written critiques are necessary in order for members to understand why one gave a particular rating. Giving a rating without an explanation as to why you gave that rating is not particularly helpful. The reason the point system is in place is for a way to filter highly rated photos to the main TrekEarth page.
  18. What kind of HTML may be used in the Photographer Notes, Critiques or Intro sections?
    <B>Bold</B>, <I>Italic</I>, and <A>Link</A> tags are supported. Any other tags such as color, font size etc. are not supported and may be removed in the future.
  19. How do I make a link in my Intro/note/critique?

  20. I signed in, but when I click on another page I get signed out automatically. Why?
    In order to use this site, it's necessary to enable cookies.
  21. I mistakenly posted a photo to a wrong country. How can I change it?

    If you wish to use an alias, please use a realistic alias, or use an initial.
  23. My critique ability has been disabled permanently. Is it possible to restore?
    Sure, start writing sincere critiques, and then email questions@www.trekearth.com and your critique ability will be restored one time.
  24. There is a special occasion so I want to post a flower, candle etc. close up. Is that OK?
    Please respect the tos by not doing this, or posting it as a workshop, or some other site instead.
  25. Since this is a public site on the internet, free speech exists so we may write anything we wish, right?
    This is a private, moderated site open to the public. Please be respectful of others. Failure to do so may result in posts being removed, and/or account removal.
  26. May I complain publicly about a critique/photo/post etc. being removed?
    Please send an email if you feel a post was incorrectly removed, and it may be restored.
  27. May I post a photo of a painting or drawing?
    If there is someone other element in the photo then it's probably ok. Please do not post exact duplicates of painting etc as there are copyright issues that need to be taken into account, and in addition, this is a photography site, not a general art site.
    Misc
  28. Why can I only upload one photo per day?
    In order not to overload the browsing experience, and to encourage self-editing, uploads are limited to one per day. In addition, two workshop uploads are also permitted.
  29. Is direct linking of photos permitted?
    Direct linking is used to link photos directly to one website from another website. This is not permitted for a couple of main reasons. One is that if direct linking were permitted, bandwidth would quickly be used up. Another reason is that people on the other website would not realize the photo is being stored on TrekEarth. Therefore if you want to display a photo on another website, I recommend displaying the link to the entire page containing the photo. For example, if you want to show my photo of Himeji Castle, you could display the link to the page:

  30. How may I purchase a print or digital image?
    You must contact the photographer directly by clicking the 'Contact Me' link next to the photographer's name in their 'Intro' page. In order to do so you will need to register with TrekEarth first. If you still have problems contacting the photographer, please email copyright@www.trekearth.com with your request and it will be forwarded to them. Excessive requests may not be processed.
  31. May I change my username?
    A one-time change may be done. Please send an email with this request.
  32. How may I cancel my account?
    Remove your photos and send an email to questions@www.trekearth.com to have your account deactivated.
  33. I have a question that I don't see answered in the FAQ. Who may I contact with questions about TrekEarth?
