eye catching I would rather say, but a nice one. From my experience I have seen children photos are the most safe to click , while the most difficult is to click an young lady .. ;) hehehehe.. jokes apart ...
I think now it is the time for you to change your camera.. this composition is so nice but the color treatment has spoiled it little... it is giving me more contrast which sometime would obstruct me for a smooth navigation.. like the places in the background and the bottom left corners.. it really draws the attention whereas my attention should be with the child face specially on his eyes.

I was browsing through Kumbh Mela pictures in Trekearth for sometime and found this one is an excellent one Sabyasachi.
in terms of composition this is good, a main character in foreground takes almost half of the frame and other two non-sadhu pilgrim in background balance it perfectly. The sky is grogeous and so is you fill-in flash concept. But besides all what i like most here is the atmosphere of the picture . I was searching for that atmosphere Sabyasachi.. I must say i am totally disappointed by seeing other Allahabad photos here, mostly portraits or photos not related to kumbh mela ( such as red chilis ).. even in some of your photos too ...
But here is a perfect example of the atmosphere of the religious mela. What i believe, in a photograph you should capture the feelings of the situation, mood of the situations, not a general picture perfect composition.. and here it is a perfect example.. congratulations.

ok im not a big fan of 4:3 format photos and thats why this photograph does not make me comfortable for my eyes, i would have cropped the upper portion a bit so that the black portion of the right would have been avoided.
otherwise this is a good photograph.. the color patches are good, unless the B/W brings out the soul of a picture, do not turn it to monochrome. This color is better.. I liked this composition and atmosphere.

I agree with Evren here and only with Evren here. I don't think it is a good photo to upload, at least I would not have done it.
This one definitely lacks a sharpness and focus .. ( in a night photography it is hard sometime ) but i wont talk about that , for me it looses the context too...The background looks unnatural to me .. and the yellow , I don't know still..
it is hard to believe that this is how the picture came in camera ... I have mine which gives me an entire night feeling ( may be the camera settings or white balance of your camera need to be checked )...and the feelings of those happy kids, i dont really know..
I think there are many more better photograph u should have.. i remember one from those brothers (in fruit market )...
Second thing .. nothing to do with an P&S and DSLR.. for me I think it is the compostiton and the feeling what is more important.. I never felt handicapped when i had a small tiny Nikon coolpix camera or even my G6...
Yes, definitely an SLR brings a better version what you see through your lens than a compact camera... SLR enhances the vision what you see, it does not change the photograph at all..sometimes in a street photography it is good to have a small camera ( may be a RICOH GRD) just not to get attention of people ( remember if you have a big canon equipment and a 70-200mm L lens you will eventually get noticed by everybody and it is not always good that people should come and ask for a photograph, you are here to convey something else, not some funny portraits, isn't it?)
Evren told something very important..
it is required to have more and more shoot while you do a street photography and get the experience , interact with people and all.. I hope you will see a good progress ...
