Women by jrzufferey (7305)

Fantastic candid portrait. The framing, DOF, and especially the moment you captured, are all just right. The deep, saturated colors are great, although the overall exposure seems a big dark to me. I also wish the woman was just a bit sharper (motion blur?), but it's not a serious problem. Well done.

I like this photo a lot. The geometry and various lines, shapes and textures balance well. The unusual POV and human element add something dynamic to this otherwise static 2-D shot. If I could change anything, it would be to put the person a bit more off-center. But it's a minor nit. Nicely done.
The Candle by milestorm (16)

This image is adequately captured, but doesn't tell me anything. There is no detail visible in the candle, table or background that gives me a sense of place. Aesthetically, my only complaint is the cropped flame in the reflection. I would prefer to see the whole reflection.

I like the bold composition created by your tight crop, and the smile in his eyes is really engaging. It is great that you maintained detail even in the dark black areas. However, skin tones look way off, which is displeasing to my eye.
twin tower in memories by picto5 (62)

I like how you've lined up the towers so they just touch. Overall low contrast creates an interesting 2-D effect that you don't often see in NYC skylines. But the extreme image softness along with the rough cropping/clipping along the top (and need for dust spotting) reduces the appeal of this image for me. You could fix all these problems (even add more sky on top) with judicious Photoshop work.

I love the bold, saturated colors in this image, and the palpable warmth of the sun (sunrise?). The vast expanse of the snow and sky balance each other in the frame, and the barn makes a great centerpiece. You can feel that this place is deserted, but it still has a lot of character. This image is very effective in conveying a sense of place...and makes me damn glad I live in California.
Man in Chinatown by carolynanna (1324)

Nice street shot. Composition is very good--careful not to crop any of the key people in the frame. I like that there are so many clearly identifiable individuals in the frame, but that the focus, framing, and DOF draw you to the central man. Nicely done.
Girl on Horse by carolynanna (1324)

I want to like this shot, but it just doesn't do it for me. We really get nothing from the mother who occupies so much of the foreground. Her face/expression is totally concealed, so we can't see her reaction to the girl. Plus her blown out jacket is distracting. Also, the girl on the giraffe just seems frozen, wide-eyed, staring at the photographer. This is a PJ shot, but I sense that you missed the decisive moment where the child's spontaneous play occurred naturally. That said, I like the visual layout of this shot, with near-middle-farground human elements, and lots of interesting details to give us a sense of place.
